Reverse GST Calculation Explained: Finding the Base Price
Learn the exact formula for reverse GST calculation. Easily extract the base price and tax amount from an MRP using our GST Calculator.
When you purchase a product from a retail store, the price tag usually displays the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). This MRP is inclusive of all taxes, meaning the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is already baked into the final number.
But what if you are a business owner buying materials and you need to know exactly how much of that MRP is the base cost and how much is the GST? You need to perform a Reverse GST Calculation.
The Common Mistake
A very common mistake people make is simply subtracting the GST percentage from the total price. Incorrect Example: If the total price is ₹1,180 (including 18% GST), people often calculate 18% of 1,180 (which is ₹212.40) and subtract it to get a base price of ₹967.60. This is mathematically wrong.
The Correct Reverse GST Formula
To correctly extract the base price, you must realize that the Total Price represents 100% (the base) + the GST % (e.g., 18%). Therefore, the Total Price is 118% of the base price.
Base Price = (Total Price × 100) / (100 + GST Rate) GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price
Let’s Use the Correct Formula:
Total Price = ₹1,180. GST Rate = 18%.
- Base Price = (1,180 × 100) / 118
- Base Price = 118,000 / 118 = ₹1,000
- GST Amount = 1,180 - 1,000 = ₹180
(The ₹180 GST is further split into ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST if it is an intra-state purchase).
Why is Reverse Calculation Important?
- Claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC): If you buy a product for your business, you can claim back the GST paid. You need to record the exact base price and tax amount in your accounting software.
- Profit Margin Analysis: Knowing the true cost of goods (excluding tax) is vital for setting your own selling prices and calculating accurate profit margins.
- B2B Invoicing: B2B invoices must clearly separate the taxable value and the tax amounts.
