Calculating the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a routine task for business owners, accountants, and even consumers in India. Whether you are generating an invoice or trying to figure out the base price of a product, understanding how to use a GST Calculator is essential.
The Indian GST Structure
Before diving into the calculations, it is important to know that India follows a multi-tier tax structure. The standard GST rates are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, depending on the type of goods or services.
When a transaction occurs within the same state (Intra-state), the GST is split equally into:
- CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government.
- SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government.
For inter-state transactions, a single IGST (Integrated GST) is levied, which goes entirely to the Central Government.
How to Add GST to a Base Price
If you have the base price (excluding tax) and need to find the final price (inclusive of tax), the formula is straightforward:
GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100 Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount
Example
You are selling a laptop with a base price of ₹40,000. The applicable GST rate is 18%.
- GST Amount = (40,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹7,200
- Total Price = 40,000 + 7,200 = ₹47,200
Tip: If you are selling within the same state, this ₹7,200 is split into ₹3,600 CGST and ₹3,600 SGST.
How to Remove GST (Reverse Calculation)
Often, a product’s MRP already includes the GST. If you need to find the pre-tax base price, you must perform a reverse calculation. You cannot simply subtract the percentage.
Base Price = (Total Price × 100) / (100 + GST Rate) GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price
Example
A mobile phone is sold for ₹15,000 (inclusive of 12% GST). What is the base price?
- Base Price = (15,000 × 100) / (100 + 12) = 1,500,000 / 112 = ₹13,392.85
- GST Amount = 15,000 - 13,392.85 = ₹1,607.15
