The Ultimate GST Calculator Guide for Indian Freelancers
Are you a freelancer in India? Learn when to charge GST, how to use a GST calculator, and how to invoice your clients properly.
Freelancing in India is booming, but the tax implications can be confusing. Do you need a GST number? Should you add 18% GST to your invoice? How do you calculate it?
Let’s break down the rules for freelancers and show you how to use a GST Calculator to generate professional, compliant invoices.
When Do Freelancers Need to Register for GST?
For service providers (including freelancers), GST registration becomes mandatory when your Aggregate Annual Turnover exceeds ₹20 Lakh in a financial year (the limit is ₹10 Lakh for Special Category States).
However, if you export your services to clients outside India, you are engaged in “Inter-state supply.” Historically, this required mandatory registration regardless of turnover, but recent notifications have relaxed this, allowing service exporters to remain unregistered up to the ₹20 Lakh threshold.
If you choose to register voluntarily (to claim Input Tax Credit on your business expenses like laptops and software), you must charge GST on all your domestic invoices.
How to Invoice Domestic Clients
If you are a registered freelancer providing services (like web development, writing, or design) to an Indian client, the applicable GST rate is typically 18%.
Adding GST to Your Base Fee
Suppose you agree on a project fee of ₹50,000.
- Use our GST Calculator.

50000. - Select the rate:
18%. - Click Add GST.
- The tool will show your GST amount as ₹9,000 and your total invoice value as ₹59,000.
If your client is in the same state as you, bill it as ₹4,500 CGST and ₹4,500 SGST. If they are in a different state, bill it as ₹9,000 IGST. You can verify your client’s state code using our GSTIN Validator.
Handling Inclusive Budgets
Sometimes a client says, “My total budget is ₹50,000 including GST.” You need to know your actual base fee.

50000in the calculator. - Select
18%. - Click Remove GST.
- The tool reveals your base fee is ₹42,372.88, and the GST amount is ₹7,627.12.
Finding Your SAC Code
As a service provider, you must mention a Service Accounting Code (SAC) on your invoice. For IT services, it might be 998314; for content writing, it might be different. You can quickly search for your specific profession using our HSN Code Lookup tool.
By automating the math and tracking your Due Dates Calendar, you can spend less time worrying about taxes and more time focusing on your freelance business!
