HSN Code Invoicing

Finding HSN Codes for Exports: An 8-Digit Requirement

Exporting goods from India requires an 8-digit HSN code on your shipping bill. Learn how to find and verify these codes for customs clearance.

Finding HSN Codes for Exports: An 8-Digit Requirement

Exporting goods from India is generally treated as a “zero-rated supply” under the GST regime. This means you do not pay tax on the export, but the documentation requirements are actually stricter than domestic sales. One of the strictest rules involves the Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes.

If you are preparing an export invoice or a shipping bill, you must use an HSN Code Lookup tool to ensure compliance.

The 8-Digit HSN Rule for Exports

For domestic B2B invoices, businesses with a turnover under ₹5 Crore can get away with mentioning just a 4-digit HSN code, while larger businesses must mention a 6-digit code.

However, for Imports and Exports, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Indian Customs require an 8-digit HSN Code on all shipping bills and bills of entry.

Why the Extra Precision?

The first 6 digits of an HSN code are internationally standardized by the World Customs Organization (WCO). The 7th and 8th digits are added by individual countries (in this case, India) to further classify products for domestic taxation and specific export incentives (like RoDTEP or Duty Drawback).

The Consequences of an Incorrect 8-Digit Code

Using an incorrect 8-digit code on an export document can lead to:

  1. Customs Clearance Delays: Your shipment might be flagged and held at the port, leading to demurrage charges.
  2. Loss of Export Benefits: If you claim a duty drawback under the wrong HSN classification, your claim will be rejected.
  3. Refund Blockages: Exporters often claim refunds on accumulated Input Tax Credit (ITC). If the HSN on the shipping bill doesn’t match the GSTR-1 return, your refund processing will be delayed.

How to Verify Your Export HSN

  1. Start by finding the broader category of your product using our offline HSN Code Lookup tool.
  2. Once you have the 4 or 6-digit base, consult the official Indian Customs Tariff list or the CBIC portal to drill down to the exact 8-digit specification.
  3. When preparing the commercial invoice, ensure the taxable values are computed accurately (even if the GST rate applied is 0% for the export) using a reliable GST Calculator.

Never guess your export classification. An accurate 8-digit HSN code ensures smooth sailing through customs and faster realization of your export benefits.
