Made an error in a GST e-invoice after generating its Invoice Reference Number (IRN)? The key rule is that an IRN cancellation request can be sent to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) within 24 hours from the time the invoice was reported. An IRN already generated cannot be edited on the IRP. The correction route depends on whether the document was actually cancelled and whether GSTR-1 has already been filed.
The 24-hour limit is not a general permission to erase a completed sale. GSTN also says that an e-invoice cannot be partially cancelled, a connected active or officer-verified e-way bill can block cancellation, and a cancelled invoice number cannot be reused for another IRN.
GST e-invoice cancellation rules at a glance
| Situation | GSTN guidance |
|---|---|
| Cancel an IRN | Send the cancellation request through the IRP within 24 hours of reporting |
| Active or officer-verified e-way bill | IRN cancellation is not permitted while the connected e-way bill is in that status |
| Partial cancellation | Not permitted; the IRN cancellation is for the whole document |
| Edit an IRN invoice on IRP | Not possible; amendments are made through the GST Portal return process |
| Reuse a cancelled invoice number | Not permitted for another IRN |
These are portal-process rules. The underlying commercial cancellation, accounting entry, and tax treatment must still be recorded correctly.
When can you cancel an IRN?
GSTN’s e-invoicing FAQ says the cancellation request can be triggered through the Cancel API within 24 hours from the time of reporting the invoice to IRP. The time starts when the invoice is reported, not when someone later discovers the typo.
Before attempting cancellation, check whether an e-way bill is linked. GSTN says cancellation is not permitted if the connected e-way bill is active or has been verified by an officer during transit. Also check that the entire invoice should be cancelled; GSTN does not permit cancellation of only one line or part of an IRN document.
What if only one invoice field is wrong?
An IRN invoice cannot be edited on the IRP. GSTN directs taxpayers to make changes to invoice details on the GST Portal while filing GSTR-1. If GSTR-1 has already been filed, the existing GST amendment mechanism applies, subject to the applicable rules and time limits.
Do not cancel a valid supply merely to change a field if the IRP window or e-way bill status does not allow it. Identify the precise correction, preserve the original invoice and supporting records, and use the applicable return or document process. Our GSTR-1 filing guide explains the outward-supply return workflow.
What if the 24-hour cancellation window has expired?
The IRP will not accept an IRN cancellation after the window closes. GSTN’s FAQ describes cases where an invoice was cancelled in the supplier’s system but its IRN could no longer be cancelled: the supplier should report the documents actually issued for the tax period in GSTR-1 and remove auto-populated invoice details wherever required to reflect documents actually cancelled during that period.
That is not a blanket instruction to delete a genuine supply. First establish whether the invoice was issued to the customer, whether the supply happened, what document was cancelled, and what the e-invoice and GSTR-1 records show. If the commercial transaction is still valid, an accounting-system cancellation alone does not settle its GST treatment. For material or already-reported errors, ask a GST professional to review the documents and period before changing a filed return.
Can a cancelled invoice number be used again?
No. GSTN says the invoice number associated with a cancelled IRN cannot be reused to generate another e-invoice, even if the IRN was cancelled within 24 hours. The IRN uses identifiers including the supplier GSTIN, document number, document type, and financial year. Follow the invoice numbering controls in your accounting system and allocate a fresh eligible document number for a genuinely new invoice.
A safe correction workflow
- Pause sending or re-sending the invoice. Confirm what the buyer received and whether the supply has taken place.
- Check the IRP timestamp and status. Note when the invoice was reported and whether the linked e-way bill is active or verified.
- Choose the right route. If the whole document should be cancelled and the portal conditions permit it, request cancellation within 24 hours. For a field correction, use the GST Portal return amendment route rather than trying to edit the IRN.
- Reconcile GSTR-1. E-invoices can auto-populate return data. Check the actual documents and remove or amend only entries that should not remain, following GSTN instructions.
- Retain evidence. Save the original invoice, IRN response, cancellation acknowledgement or error, credit/debit note if relevant, and a note explaining the correction.
If the problem is with the sales document itself, the GST Credit/Debit Note Generator can prepare a draft for review; it does not cancel an IRN or decide whether a note is legally required. The E-Invoice Eligibility Checker checks threshold and exemption inputs, not invoice cancellation status.
E-invoice cancellation FAQs
Is the e-invoice cancellation deadline 24 hours?
Yes. GSTN says an IRN cancellation request may be triggered through the Cancel API within 24 hours from the time of reporting the invoice to IRP.
Can I cancel an e-invoice after 24 hours?
The IRN cannot be cancelled on IRP after the 24-hour window. Follow GSTN’s instructions for GSTR-1 and the actual document status; get professional advice if a filed return or completed supply is involved.
Can I edit an e-invoice after getting the IRN?
No. GSTN says amendments are not possible on the IRP. Changes must be made through the GST Portal return mechanism, with the timing depending on whether GSTR-1 has been filed.
Can I cancel only one item on a multi-item invoice?
No. Partial IRN cancellation is not permitted. Confirm the accounting and GST treatment for the specific transaction before issuing any replacement or note.
Can I reuse the invoice number after cancelling an IRN?
No. GSTN says the invoice number linked to a cancelled IRN cannot be reused to generate another IRN.
Does cancellation of the IRN cancel the sale automatically?
No. IRN cancellation is a portal action. The supplier must still record the commercial outcome and report the actual documents and supplies correctly under GST rules.
