Frequently Asked Questions
What is the time limit for issuing a credit note under GST?
A credit note must be declared in the return for the month in which it is issued, but no later than 30th November following the end of the financial year of the original supply, or the date of filing annual return (GSTR-9), whichever is earlier.
Does the buyer need to reverse ITC when a credit note is issued?
Yes. When a supplier issues a credit note, the corresponding ITC claimed by the buyer must be reversed. If the buyer does not reverse the ITC, the credit note will appear as a mismatch in GSTR-2B reconciliation.
Can a credit note be issued without GST?
Yes. A financial or commercial credit note (without GST implications) can be issued for post-sale discounts if the discount was not part of the original agreement. However, this type of credit note cannot be used to adjust GST liability or ITC.
How is a credit note reported in GSTR-1?
Credit notes are reported in Table 9B of GSTR-1. For B2B credit notes, you need to mention the original invoice number, GSTIN of the buyer, and the tax amounts. B2C credit notes are reported in aggregate.
